Originally from Hartford, CT, Joel learned music at an early age. He was always plucking away on a guitar, discovering chords by ear and trying to emulate some of his favorite musicians. Though, he never enrolled in a formal music lesson of any kind. Growing up around the sounds of 60’s music by way of his parents, his introduction to music was rooted in the rich lyrical traditions of American Folk Music. Eventually, his musical palate became diversified as he discovered 70’s classic rock, the catchy songs that emerged from the indulgent 80’s and, of course, the Seattle sounds of the late 90’s. He also became an avid listener of Jazz, and was captivated with the stylistic guitar playing of Kenny Burrell, the soulful and haunting vocal sounds of Billie Holiday, the improvisations of Miles Davis and many others. This convergence of influences; jazz, folk, rock and pop provided a unique backdrop as he continued to develop musically.

While in college, Joel began writing full songs. He also formed a band that played for roughly a year, though unfortunately, never outside the confines of their rehearsal studio. However, the practice and knowledge gained proved beneficial. During this time he became more intrigued with music, and especially the craft of songwriting.

Eventually, he landed in New York City. Having refined a few songs he had written over the years, he auditioned for the acclaimed New York Singer Songwriter Sessions. To his delight, he obtained membership, and was invited to perform along other singer/songwriters. He continued to work his craft at New York’s legendary Bitter End on Sunday evenings. As each performance passed, he found his voice, his sound and was able to interact with other singer/songwriters from San Francisco to Nashville. Joel also started to establish a mailing list and a loyal following. This, of course, led to him booking longer time slots at The Bitter End, as well as many other clubs in New York.

Today, Joel is constantly performing at many of New York’s most notable music venues. He has earned a diverse and growing audience. His style is that of folk and pop, infused with rich lyrics and original melodies, and is creating a fantastic buzz in the New York City independent music scene. His live shows are captivating, and each one offers a unique experience that instantaneously engages his audience. It is always special to witness a songwriter, utilizing one instrument and their voice, captivate a room. Joel is able to deliver a message to his listeners on several levels. He has a mature and developed sound as a musician and as a songwriter. He has without a doubt started to put his stamp on the tradition of American songwriting, and one will be fortunate to catch him at such an exciting time in his career.

Joel is going into the studio summer 2007 to start recording a CD, and hopes for completion early fall 2007.
